In Encounters, director Graham Foy finds quiet moments of mystery and beauty in the everyday. Shot on 35mm in Toronto, this series of one-minute micro-dramas offers fleeting glimpses into the private worlds of strangers – their rituals, desires and daydreams. Each film follows a simple set of rules: one character, one location, one encounter, captured on a single roll of film. Like fragments of stories we’ll never know, these delicate cinematic portraits invite us to pause, observe and imagine the lives of others.

Graham Foy’s statement:

“The project is something like a filmmaker’s sketchbook, drawing inspiration from photography and photobooks as much as cinema and deleted scenes on Blu-ray special features. A photograph can become meaningful simply because someone looked closely enough to notice something. Encounters tries to extend that experience through time.

“Each episode is an experiment in character, performance, atmosphere, sound and observation. Across the series, the films are connected less by narrative than by an attention to human behavior, private persistence, and the mysterious pull of being immersed in another person’s experience for a moment in time.”
