On The Cusp, Longlist - Music Video

Jerome Farah, Concrete Jungle Fever

DIVISION

This video was all about Jerome playing this different persona so, I really wanted to explore the idea of other people’s perceptions of him versus his own, and what they are trying to make him become. From very early on we wanted him to play multiple characters and for there to be a convenience store/supermarket and that was about it. After that he was happy for me to just do my thing.

Storytelling, authenticity and diversity are the raw ingredients that excite Melbourne based Sri Lankan/Australian writer and director Sanjay De Silva. Part of an upcoming generation of Australian filmmakers, De Silva’s voice is defiantly distinct. Unapologetic and gritty, his memorable visual style combines youth culture themes with a tongue-in-cheek playfulness. Using immersive camerawork and a bold colour palette, De Silva plunges viewers into his emotionally charged stories. An energy that permeates all his work. Most recently, he’s collaborated with Sampa The Great on her music videos Time’s Up and Final Form (premiered on Nowness). As well as her homecoming story in the short film The Return. In 2020, De Silva also made his advertising debut, with his first Australian TVC. His work has been recognised locally and internationally at the 2020 D&AD Awards, 2020 Clipped Awards and 2019 J Awards, as well as 2019 and 2020 ARIA nominations. Whilst his shorts have earned a growing following at the Palm Springs International Shortfest, Melbourne International Film Festival and Miami International Film Festival.
