Flying High, Longlist - Humour

'The Sandwich'

Jonnie Malachi

I didn't think too hard when I wrote this story. Primarily I wanted to see if I could bring an inanimate object to life & make you feel for it. I was eating a lot of cheese sandwiches at the time. However once the film was shot & edited, it provoked intense & polarising opinions. I was in therapy at the time & shocked by the raw & triggering reactions, I recounted the story of 'The Sandwich' to my therapist only to realise I'd actually written about my childhood, and that I WAS 'The Sandwich'!!! It's essentially about a child's unconditional love for its parents - its eagerness to please & be cherished, even if that isn't necessarily reciprocated. It made me realise the power of writing & filmmaking to subconsciously work through personal trauma. I've naturally gravitated towards comedy as a way to escape pain, but always written dark comedy. Wrapping real emotion with comedy can open doors to useful & important discussions with others. After seeing the offline, a US prod co I was on the verge of signing with totally froze me out & I've not heard from them since. This totally rocked me & precipitated the following SHOTS article: https://www.shots.net/news/view/jonnie-malachi-gets-surreal-about-comedy
