Emma Branderhorst is a filmmaker whose intimate, character-driven storytelling turns social issues into personal narratives. From award-winning short films such as Spotless (Crystal Bear, Berlinale) to the viral Cannes Grand Prix winner Piece of Me for KPN. Telling emotionally resonant stories from a feminine perspective through a naturalistic lens. She is now working on her first feature film, exploring the painful unraveling of a once-inseparable friendship.

What grabbed me immediately was how these scripts use something so small and metaphorical to talk about something heavy. There’s no big drama, no villain filling the frame, just behaviour in the very early stages of abuse. And paradoxically, that makes it even more unsettling.

Working with real snakes was intense, but in a strangely beautiful way. From the moment I read the scripts, I knew it had to be real snakes. I wanted as much as possible to happen in-camera, because the physical presence changes everything. The actors can feel it, and the audience can almost feel it too. It gives you that subtle chill you can’t create with VFX.
