Colin has wrapped shooting on Muscle Bound and is now in post-production, alongside a new music video for The Scratch and another short doc, My Friend, Kev, about an old friend and the distance time creates.
The Scratch came to me with a starting point: the sheer weirdness of 80s/90s snooker: the photoshoots, the boozy players, the heightened drama. That rabbit hole pulled me in and led to John McIntyre: a fictional snooker champion and recovering alcoholic, played by long-time collaborator Roy Gilmore, who brought real nuance and restraint to the role.
Visually, our DOP Daniel Sedgwick leaned into the era by shooting on a vintage broadcast lens he’d previously used on a documentary we made together. It gave us that unmistakable old-TV texture: soft, imperfect, and strangely beautiful. The energy and thumping nature of the song pointed me in the direction of slow-zooms mixed with a quick, shaky handheld. We also drew from the pace and pressure of Marty Supreme and other Safdie brothers’ films, aiming for something propulsive but character-led.
