Soulful Callum Lloyd-James
Callum is a filmmaker interested the awkward moments, quiet emotions and small details that make people feel real. He often threads in touches of surrealism and dry wit, using them to highlight feeling rather than distract from it.
His connection to film started young, with an iPod Nano becoming an unlikely way into the films that stuck with him. Influenced by everything from classic cinema to low budget music videos, he later studied film across the UK, the USA and India, building his technical understanding while shaping his own voice as a storyteller.
Callum’s work is character led and visually playful, but always rooted in something human. Whether he is making music videos, short films or more experimental projects, his focus is on honesty, emotion and finding humour in the everyday.
As a director I was deeply inspired by the energy and vibrancy of the Northern Soul movement, I sought to portray its essence in a concise and powerful dance narrative. Set against the beat of rare vinyl records, "Soulful" follows the process of dancers as they prepare for the highs and lows of life through the medium of Northern Soul.
This film was conceived with a vision to capture the dynamic and improvised nature of Northern Soul dancing. From the outset, I aimed to create a piece that felt alive, spontaneous, and authentic, much like the dancers who embrace the movement with passion and creativity.
The opening sequence was designed to encapsulate the anticipation that precedes a Northern Soul night. Drawing inspiration from my own observations within the community, I aimed to show the excitement and energy that runs through the air as dancers prepare to immerse themselves in a world of rhythm and movement.
Ultimately this film is a testament to the power of spontaneity and improvisation in dance. It celebrates the freedom to express oneself authentically and embraces the beauty of imperfection, capturing the raw emotion of Northern Soul in all its glory. Through this piece, I hope to inspire audiences to embrace spontaneity in their own lives and find joy in the imperfect and unscripted moments that make life truly beautiful.
