Sleep Now in the Fire

Todd Tourso

Iconoclast

"Sleep Now In The Fire" is a 10-minute short film directed by Todd Tourso. It explores the concept of liberation theology and was inspired by Tourso’s work with Rage Against The Machine. Christianity is a source of hope, strength, and identity for a large part of the world’s population and its iconography changed the art, beliefs and traditions of many native cultures. Western religion is also one of the greatest tools of oppression. The Crusades were the blueprint for the colonization of the Americas. “Sleep Now In The Fire” reframes the archetypal story of a suffering God resurrected, into a metaphor for the liberation of the poor and politically oppressed. Shot on location in Tlalnepantla, Desierto de los Leones, Nezahualcoyotl, Chimalhuacan, and Playa Chacalacas during the summer of 2022; The film is a visual meditation on death, rebirth, and resilience.

LA-based Todd Tourso is an American director, filmmaker and art director. Best known as Beyoncé’s creative director, he has been responsible for much of the musician’s iconic work including live performances, music videos and album concepts. Tourso oversaw her iconic “Drunk In Love” and “Yonce” videos and directed her “Heaven”, “Jealous” and MTV Video Music Award-winning “7/11” videos. He produced her visual album “Lemonade” which was based on the journey of self-knowledge and healing of black women. Emmy and Grammy-nominated, it won MTV Video Music Award Best Long Form Video and Peabody Awards in 2016. Todd has also worked as an art director for Warner Bros Records, creative director for Flaunt magazine, and art director for Haus Labs by Lady Gaga, where he directed the spots for the launch of the superstar’s Fame fragrance. After studying graphic design at the legendary ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, Tourso created streetwear brand Plain Gravy. In 2005 he launched the famous ‘Pharrell Can’t Skate’ T-shirt which caught the attention of the musician himself and led to Tourso collaborating with Beyoncé. He continues to work with musical artists directing the videos "Lemon" for Pharrell's band N.E.R.D featuring Rihanna and “Run For Me” for French electro artist SebastiAn. In the commercials world, he has directed ads and designed installations for Apple, Nike, Barneys New York, Beats by Dre and Coach. In 2020 he directed the inspiring Masterclass “Your Words Create Your World” campaign with Alicia Keys highlighting the power and beauty of words. For luggage brand TUMI’s Unpack Tomorrow global campaign, he recently shot three spots featuring F1 driver Lando Norris, footballer Richarlison de Andrade and actress Reneé Rapp. Tourso’s short film “Pupil King” opened the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2024 Men’s Collection on Paris’ Pont Neuf in June 2023, the debut show for the brand’s men’s creative director Pharrell Williams. Shot on the banks of the Seine, it features American comedian Jerrod Carmichael and artist Henry Taylor reflecting on the fashion show’s themes of love, opportunity and empowerment. In autumn 2023, Tourso directed the powerful short film “Sleep Now in the Fire”. Guided by Rage Against the Machine’s 1999 track, it is a visual meditation on death, rebirth and resilience. Nowness described the piece as “a powerful image of modern Mexico, exploring the clash of its traditional spiritualism and rich ecology with aggressive border politics and social conflict”. To this day Tourso still applies the fundamentals of visual communication he learnt as a graphic design student. “The importance of process, critique - and collaboration which is everything,” he says. Indeed his greatest collaborator Beyoncé told W Magazine in 2017 that Tourso was “one of the most fearless human beings I’ve worked with. He understands seemingly unachievable ideas and always finds a way to advance them”.
