The New Spanish Movement
Ivo Van Vollenhoven, founding partner of 24/7, whose heart and soul lies in Spain and filmmaking, shares his low-down on the burgeoning talent of Spanish directors

After Franco’s death in 1975, and the consequent restoration of democracy towards the end of the 1970s, Spain experienced a period of transition, as radical changes came to light both with regards to politics and society. La Movida was a movement that spanned across every area of Spain; a sort of creative catharsis after the sustained rule of the dictator Francisco Franco, which had seen numerous laws imposed aiming to preserve the traditional role of the family unit, and many restrictions in place in various media outlets restricting creativity and expression.

Pedro Almodóvar, a prominent film director part of the Movida movement, referred to the period as a bunch of people that “coincided in one of the most explosive moments in the country”.

Now we are experiencing a new movement of rising Spanish talent, again one of the most explosive moments in our time for the Spanish creative industry. This started with directive collective CANADA putting Spain on the map after the music video EL Guincho / Bombay, followed by Los Pérez making The Low Cost festival commercial in 2012 and more recently the rise of Menorcan director Ian Pons Jewell. A nest of creative talent is emerging rapidly with a new breed of artists like Madrid-born Diana Kunst with her latest music video for Rosalía and Nur Casadevall with her compelling short films and music videos.

It’s very hard to select a small list of directors to showcase as we have at least 30 amazing directors worthy of being mentioned. [1.4: Great we look forward to Part 2 soon then].
