WEBSITE

Leo Villares and Victor Nauwynck are a London-based directing duo specialising in music videos and commercials. They have a passion for crafting surreal storyworlds filled with unhinged comedy, and captured with deranged, hyperactive visuals. Their work has been recognised by the UK Music Video Awards, Berlin Commercial Awards, PromoNews, Aesthetica and FilmQuest.

When Ali Lacey and Yvette Young came to us with a story about a lonely man resurrecting his dog, we were immediately in. The absurd tragi-comedy of the story really appealed to our sensibilities, as we’ve always loved juxtaposing silliness with sincerity in our films.

‘Monty’ stars a fully hand-animated dog puppet, created by Saskia Tomlinson and taking inspiration from the lo-fi effects of 80s movies. Gremlins, The Thing, and The Fly all provided tonal inspiration as we designed the ‘Eterni-Pet’, a low-budget sci-fi contraption that would spawn our titular loveable monster.

Shot on 16mm film, the video is a rollercoaster montage that takes us through the highs and lows of companionship with a particularly unusual dog. We aimed to heighten the feeling of a dizzying whirlwind, using spinning camera moves, dolly zooms, and increasingly frantic editing rhythms to match the upbeat energy of the song. The video is not just a fun fling, but a reminder that the truest friends often come from the most unexpected places.
