Director's Works
This collective of French directors caught the attention of the animation world with their graduation short film “Garden Party”, which was nominated for Best Student Project at the VES Awards in Los Angeles, won the Best Young Production at the Animago Festival, and finally was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 2018 Oscars. Not only does the film show their highly developed animation skills, but also a great instinct for storytelling and comedy. They continue to use power of realistic animation to push the boundaries of the real, making captivating and memorable images for all audiences and collaborators, from luxury brands such as Van Cleef, Guerlain and Roger Dubis to household names such as Oasis and Walls Ice Cream.
The pitch for this Intermarché project was already very ambitious: a fully animated two-minute film, a multitude of characters, and a completely new visual identity to create. Our role was to understand Romance’s ambitions for this campaign and add our own touch to make the best possible film.
Our main challenge was to take a children’s storybook universe and bring a modern sensibility to it, creating a film that fits seamlessly with Intermarché’s identity. From the very beginning, we worked with fantastic artists who explored a visual style that evoked both Christmas tales and children’s illustrations. Once this art direction was established, the more technical work began: translating this aesthetic into an animated film using much more modern tools. The goal was to preserve the essence of the illustrations while taking it further to tell a story that feels relevant today.
What we aimed to do was blur the line between what was computer-generated and what was hand-painted by artists, so that viewers never question the technology and are instead fully absorbed by the characters and the story surrounding them.
