After directing several short documentaries including my debut 'Heart Valley’, which won Tribeca Film Festival and a BAFTA Cymru Award, this is my first branded documentary. I was originally approached by Deliveroo, with the brief to creatively tell their story with my production company Dalmatian Films. It was one I actually knew almost nothing about, but for five months went on the wild ride of how a scrappy start-up became a globally recognised brand. It didn’t disappoint. I was also able to persuade founder Will Shu to recreate wearing his first moped helmet and put our DOP’s camera in a delivery bag on the back of a motorbike, riding around London. It was genuinely inspiring to make, and to hear from so many just how hard it was to make a success.
‘That First Year: The Story of Deliveroo’ is a definitive and all-access short documentary, taking you on Deliveroo’s epic founding journey of their first year as a company. With exclusive interviews including CEO and founder Will Shu, co-founder Greg Orlowski and restaurant critic Jimi Famurewa, it’s a story that proves that an entire industry can change forever with a single bike ride, determination and a great idea.
