We made the film in response to years of increasingly regressive developments around women’s rights – from reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy to gender equality and women’s safety. The illusion that progress is linear has become impossible to ignore: rights once considered secure are being challenged, rolled back, or openly contested. As these rights are increasingly called into question, it becomes all the more urgent to create space for female perspectives.
To carry this feminist vision through to the way the film was made, (Un)Becoming was conceived by women and brought to life by an almost entirely female crew. It stars Carla Juri (Blade Runner 2049, Wetlands) in the lead role.
