Director Aisha Schliessler takes on the rules of female behaviour in MANNERS, a fashion short set inside the Art Deco interiors of Eltham Palace. Styled by Isabella Hoelk, the film borrows instructions from 1920s and 1930s etiquette manuals, then watches its protagonists quietly subvert them through gesture, wit and dress. The film also draws on the legacy of Virginia Courtauld, the palace’s former resident, whose liberal politics and refusal to conform made her a fitting reference point.
